If your late-November plans involve loading up the car and pointing it toward Dallas, Tulsa, Kansas City, or somewhere farther, now is the time to think about it — not the night before. The holidays are the one stretch of the year when many of us ask our vehicles to do something they almost never do: run five or six hours straight, fully loaded, in cold weather, on highways full of other people doing the same thing.
The good news: getting ready isn't complicated or expensive. It's a short list of driveway checks plus one stop for an oil change.
A problem you find in your driveway is an errand. The same problem found on I-35 outside Ardmore is a tow, a motel room, and a very long phone call. Nothing below is exotic — these are the ordinary things that get skipped because the car seems fine on a four-mile commute across Norman. A long trip is what exposes them. Cold weather compounds it: Oklahoma Novembers can swing thirty degrees in a day, and cold is hard on exactly the parts nobody looks at — the battery, the tires, and the oil.
Oil is the one item on this list you cannot eyeball from the outside, and it's the one that matters most when you're about to add a few hundred highway miles in a weekend.
Pull out your owner's manual — or the maintenance screen in your dash — and find your recommended interval. Then compare it to your current odometer plus the round-trip mileage you're about to add. If the trip would carry you past your service interval, get the oil changed before you leave rather than after you get back. There's no prize for squeezing in the last few hundred miles.
Highway miles are generally gentler on oil than stop-and-go driving, since the engine stays warm and at steady RPM. Short winter trips around town are actually the harder duty cycle — so if you mostly drive across Norman, don't assume your interval stretches because one trip is "just cruising."
Motor oil gets thicker as it gets colder, and a cold start is when most engine wear happens — the oil has to get from the pan up to the top of the engine before everything is properly protected. That's what the "W" rating describes. In a grade like 0W-20 or 5W-30, the first number is the cold-flow rating: lower flows better when it's cold outside.
The right answer for your car is whatever the manufacturer specifies, and it's usually printed right on the oil cap or in the manual. Don't let anyone talk you into something heavier than spec because it "sounds more protective." On a cold Oklahoma morning, oil that's too thick is the opposite of protection.
We carry conventional, synthetic blend, full synthetic, high-mileage, and diesel oils, so whatever your manual asks for, we can match it.
A few days before you leave, check your own oil level. Park on level ground, let the engine sit cool, pull the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert it fully, and read it — you want a level between the two marks. Ninety seconds, and it's the best early-warning system you have.
Tire pressure falls as temperatures drop — roughly one PSI for every ten degrees Fahrenheit. A car that was set correctly in September can easily be several PSI low by late November, and underinflated tires hurt handling, braking, fuel economy, and tire life all at once.
Two things to get right:
Use the sticker, not the sidewall. The correct pressure for your vehicle is on a placard in the driver's doorjamb or inside the fuel door. The number molded into the tire itself is a maximum, not a recommendation.
Check them cold. Measure before you drive, or at least before you've gone more than a mile. Driving heats the air inside and gives you a falsely high reading.
Then check the tread and the spare. A tread-depth gauge costs a few dollars; the penny trick works too — insert one upside down, and if you can see all of Lincoln's head, the tire is worn out. The only thing worse than a flat is a flat plus a dead spare.
The rest of the list is quick:
Coolant. Check the level in the reservoir when the engine is cool, and make sure it's a proper antifreeze mix rather than topped off with plain water. Water alone can freeze.
Washer fluid. Use a winter-rated fluid with a low freeze point. On a muddy or salted highway you'll go through more in one trip than in a month of city driving.
Wiper blades. If they chatter, streak, or leave a haze, replace them. They're inexpensive and you'll notice the difference the first time you're behind a truck in the rain.
Lights. Walk around the car with the lights on and have someone tap the brakes. Headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights.
Battery. Cold reduces the current a battery can deliver. If yours has been slow to crank on chilly mornings, get it tested before the trip — not after it leaves you stranded.
Two weeks out: check your oil interval against the trip mileage and book or plan your oil change. Get the battery tested if you've had any doubts.
One week out: oil change done. Wipers and any bulbs replaced.
Two days out: tire pressures set cold, including the spare. Fluids topped off. Car loaded.
Morning of: quick walk-around, check the oil level, and go.
We built Costa Oil – Norman around the idea that an oil change shouldn't eat your afternoon. No appointment is necessary, you stay in your car the whole time, and our team's goal is to have you in and out in about ten minutes. Every oil change includes our 18-point service — a check of fluids, tire pressure, wipers, and more — with complimentary fluid top-offs and air in your tires, which conveniently covers several items on the list above.
There's also a self-serve car wash on site, so you can knock the road grime off before you head out — or after you get back.
We're also not going to talk you into a list of services you didn't come in for. We do oil changes, we do them quickly, and we're locally owned and operated.
