Your dashboard lights up and your stomach drops. Is this a "pull over right now" problem or a "get it checked this week" problem? With oil-related warnings, the answer depends entirely on which light you are looking at - and the difference matters enormously for your engine.
Here is a plain-English guide to the oil warnings you are most likely to see, what each one is actually telling you, and what to do next.
The light that looks like an old-fashioned oil can tipping over, usually red or amber, is your oil pressure warning light. This is the serious one.
It does not mean "you are due for an oil change." It means your engine's oil pressure has dropped below the safe operating range. Oil pressure is what keeps a thin film of lubricant between metal parts that are moving thousands of times a minute. Without it, those parts contact each other directly, and the damage can happen in a very short distance of driving.
Find a safe place to pull over as soon as you reasonably can.
Shut the engine off.
Let the engine sit a few minutes, then check the oil level on the dipstick.
If the oil is low, adding oil may restore pressure - but you still want to know where it went.
If the oil level looks normal and the light stays on when you restart, do not keep driving. That points to a pressure problem rather than a level problem, and it needs a mechanic.
Continuing to drive with the oil pressure light on is one of the few car problems that can turn a manageable repair into an engine replacement in a matter of miles. When in doubt, shut it off.
Most vehicles built in the last two decades also have some kind of maintenance reminder. Depending on the manufacturer, it shows up as a wrench icon, a "MAINT REQD" message, an "Oil Change Due" message, or an oil life percentage counting down toward zero.
This is a completely different kind of alert. It is not reading your actual oil condition with a sensor. It is a calculation, based on mileage and on how the vehicle has been driven - things like engine temperature cycles, idling time, and trip length. When the counter runs out, the system tells you it is time for service.
That means you have some runway. You do not need to pull over. You do need to get in within the next week or so rather than letting it ride for another few thousand miles.
Oil life monitors shorten the interval when driving conditions are hard on oil, and a lot of normal Norman driving qualifies:
Short trips. A run to Campus Corner, a school drop-off, a quick stop on West Lindsey - trips where the engine never fully warms up let moisture and fuel traces stay in the oil instead of burning off.
Big temperature swings. Oklahoma can hand you a 90-degree afternoon and a near-freezing morning in the same month. Oil has to perform at both ends.
Summer heat and highway loads. Heat accelerates the breakdown of oil additives, and a loaded vehicle on I-35 in August is working hard.
Stop-and-go traffic. Idling counts as engine run time but covers no miles, which is exactly the kind of use these algorithms penalize.
None of this means your car is fragile. It means the reminder is doing its job, and it is worth acting on when it appears.
Some vehicles - European models especially - have a separate low oil level warning, distinct from the pressure light. It typically appears shortly after startup and may include a message telling you how much oil to add.
This is a heads-up, not an emergency. Add the correct oil for your vehicle, bring the level to the full mark, and pay attention to how fast it drops again. Every engine uses a little oil. An engine that needs a quart every thousand miles is telling you something, and so is an oil spot on the driveway.
A steady check engine light is an emissions and engine-management warning. It can be triggered by a loose gas cap, an oxygen sensor, a misfire, and dozens of other things. It is generally not an oil warning, and an oil change will not clear it.
One distinction worth knowing: a flashing check engine light usually indicates an active misfire, which can damage the catalytic converter. That one deserves prompt attention rather than a wait-and-see approach.
Oil can symbol (oil pressure). Urgency: stop driving. First move: pull over, shut off, check the oil level.
Wrench, MAINT REQD, or oil life percentage. Urgency: this week. First move: get an oil change.
Low oil level message. Urgency: soon. First move: add oil, then watch for it happening again.
Steady check engine light. Urgency: get it diagnosed. First move: scan for codes; this is not an oil issue.
Flashing check engine light. Urgency: prompt. First move: reduce load and get it looked at.
Most oil warnings are avoidable. The reminder light exists because oil has a service life, and the pressure light often shows up after a slow leak or steady consumption went unnoticed for months. Both get caught by the same habit: regular changes, with somebody actually looking at the level and the fluids in between.
That is the idea behind the 18-Point Oil Experience at Costa Oil - Norman. Along with the oil change itself, we check fluids, tire pressure, wipers and more, and fluid top-offs and air in your tires are complimentary. If your oil is disappearing between changes, that is the kind of thing a routine check surfaces before it becomes a warning light.
We are built around getting you in and out. Our team aims to finish in about 10 minutes, no appointment is necessary, and you do not need to leave your vehicle - you stay in the car while we work. We offer conventional, synthetic blend, full synthetic, and diesel oil changes, so whatever your owner's manual calls for, we can take care of it. There is also a self-serve car wash at the same location if you want to knock out both stops at once.
